
Rooted: Black Dance Series is a FREE community dance program running from May through June, created by the Maliek Community Arts Foundation (MCAF) to celebrate and share the history, culture, and impact of Black dance. Through weekly classes, participants will learn dance styles rooted in Black traditions, engage in storytelling, and build community while gaining knowledge and connection to the legacy behind the movement. The series is open to all and centers access, education, and expression, ending with a special Juneteenth celebration that honors freedom, joy, and the power of Black culture.

Ajale’ Olaséni will be teaching an energetic Afro Fusion class infused with the vibrant rhythms of Soca. This class blends traditional African movement with Caribbean energy, creating a dynamic and joyful experience for all participants.

Bakary Fall leads a dynamic West African dance class rooted in tradition, rhythm, and cultural expression. Experience the power of movement, live energy, and storytelling that reflects the rich heritage and community spirit of West African dance.

Aaliyah Berry leads a powerful Christian dance class that blends movement with faith, expression, and purpose. This class invites participants to connect spiritually while exploring worship through dance in a welcoming and uplifting environment.

Qianna McDonald leads a dynamic Black Jazz workshop, blending technique, musicality, and cultural expression. Participants will explore the roots and evolution of Black Jazz while moving with power, style, and intention.

Blossom Reid is a dynamic Caribbean dance artist who brings the vibrant energy and rhythm of Caribbean culture to every space she enters. Her work celebrates tradition, storytelling, and community through movement, inspiring dancers to connect deeply with the roots of Caribbean dance.

Shaahida Samuel is a dance educator at the Achievement First Brooklyn High school teaching grades 9-12 and member of the “Carnyval dancers” dance company. She is an alumnus of New York University where she obtained her master’s in Dance Education with a k-12 certification and is currently pursuing her PhD in dance at Temple University with a focus on traditional Grenadian dance styles. She is the director of Soul Fusion dance company.

Nasir Campbell is a choreographer and teaching artist blending Afro, Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Contemporary dance styles into a dynamic fusion rooted in culture and storytelling. His class invites participants to explore movement, musicality, and expression while connecting to the rich traditions that shape his work.
